Vincent Houdijk

is a virtuoso, versatile, Dutch percussionist, with a preference for his specialization; the vibraphone. The combination of his classical and jazz studies gave him a broad view on music. Houdijk has an investigative attitude, curious about many various types of collaborations within music and musical styles. He masters many percussion instruments and has mainly focused on the vibraphone in the past 15 years. His music style cannot be described in one word since his inspiration is mainly influenced by world music, classical, minimal and improvised music. Vincent Houdijk is an inspiring music artist and teacher with an open mind.

In 2007 Vincent founded his band VinnieVibes: an energetic, dynamic and compelling band, appreciated by fans and music programmers. In 2016, Vincent was named Young VIP and thus 'Most promising jazz talent in the Netherlands'. Thanks to this prize he toured with VinnieVibes along all major jazz venues in the Netherlands. In 2018 they were invited to perform at the world-famous North Sea Jazz Festival, where they recorded their third album. This album 'Live at the North Sea Jazz Festival' received splendid reviews from critics from the jazz scene worldwide.

Houdijk draws his inspiration from various music sources: from pop to minimal music, and from jazz to world music. This open attitude enables him to create a personal, contemporary musical story, with a good sense of harmony, melody and swing.

Since 2015 Vincent is also one of the musicians of TRIFID. A trio with a unique formation and own compositions inspired by the universe. Together they create a warm, deep and very adventurous sound that enchants the audience time and time again, such as during their tour Sounds of Interstellar Space (2019-2020). New compositions were interspersed with lectures by renowned astronomers and these concerts took place in observatories throughout the country.

Chamber Music is one of Vincent’s core musical pursuits. He forms duos with Maria Mendes, Teus Nobel, Marnix Busstra ao. On an annual base Vincent is one of the percussionists performing in the Mostly Modern Music Festival in Middelburg (NL).

Since 2005 Vincent is one of the principal percussionists at the Orchestra of the Dutch Customs. In this same orchestra he conducts the Big Band on a regular base.

Moreover Vincent was one of the founders of the Percussion Friends Foundation and he was one of the core initiators of their success nowadays. He had a big part in growing the foundation into a successful organization for 16 consecutive years.

As a teacher Vincent has over 20 years of experience and build his own unique teaching methods mixing classical techniques as well as jazz and improvisation techniques in his (master)classes. From 2013 until 2018 he was teaching vibraphone and improvisation at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, from 2014 until 2021 at the Codarts High School of Music in Rotterdam. Since 2020 Vincent is main teacher and coordinator at the AMPA Percussion Department. AMPA stands for Academy of Music and Performing Arts and it’s based in Tilburg (the Netherlands). He has been giving Masterclasses, Lectures and Concerts in The United States, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Hungary, France, Belgium, Germany, Norway, Russia ao.

Vincent collaborated with, among others: Ravi Coltrane, Sean Jones, Roberto Quintero, Luisito Quintero, Soap and Skin, Kari Ikonen, Maria Mendes, Eric Vloeimans, Bert Boeren, Bart Wirtz, Ilja Reijngoud, Teus Nobel, Scholtes Janssens Piano Duo, Arthur Jussen & Lucas Jussen, Ivo Janssen, Remy van Kesteren, Jesse Passenier, Bart de Rijk, Wouter Hamel, Kyteman (Hip Hop Orchestra), Guus Meeuwis, Mathilde Santing, the Residentie Orchestra, the Metropole Orchestra, Codarts Contemporary Bigband and ADDA Simfonica.

“Vincent Houdijk is a vibraphonist for the 21st century. At times calming, at other times energetic and inventive, he seems to be trying to redefine the instrument's place in contemporary jazz. Even more commendable is that he manages to do this without the benefit of modern sound-manipulating computer software; instead, VinnieVibes' unique European flair is employed both in the studio and on stage. While comparisons to vibes greats such as Bobby Hutcherson and Milt Jackson are unfair today, there is no doubt that the talented young vibraphonist deserves and aspires to one day receive the kind of recognition they enjoyed.”

"The compositions of Vincent Houdijk emanate power and are vigorously brought to life.

Each piece of music stimulates the imagination."

Their mastery is more apparent in the vision with which they are able to draw long melodic lines and keep an overview of the structure of the compositions. René van Peer (Brabants Dagblad)

Zur Belohnung versetzen VinnieVibes einen Sternenhimmel ins Ohr des Hörers, statt ihm bloß mit einem Feuerwerk singulärer Brillanz einzuheizen

Houdijk’s vibraphone playing is incredibly nuanced and melodic, and it locks in perfectly well with the rest of the musical backdrop. However, this release is also excellent because of the sheer energy and attitude this group managed to bring to the table.

Vincent Houdijk and VinnieVibes are quickly growing their following and reputation as one of the most exciting and engaging live acts in the contemporary jazz fusion scene. Their studio releases are absolutely praiseworthy, but there is something even more electrifying about their live shows.
